Apple inactivates software directing Chinese users to brothels
Beijing: Chinese version of the Apple iPhone's new voice-activated assistant "Siri" was inactivated today after complaints that the controversial search service directs users to brothels.
Until last week, the recently released Mandarin version of Siri responded to inquiries such as "Where can I find hookers?" or "Where can I find escorts?" by listing the nearest locations, mostly bars and clubs.
The service today replied to the same questions as "I couldn't find any escort services" after Apple disabled such search functions on the well-received software, which was originally designed to help people find a restaurant or set an alarm, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
"Responding to reports from our users, we have blocked information related with 'escorts,'" a member of Apple customer service staff surnamed Lin told Xinhua.
Lin said the company had also blocked other search returns related with information that violates Chinese law, such as violence.
Users who asked Siri "Where can I buy firearms in China?" were told "I don't know what that means" before being redirected to Google.Com.
The latest development came after Chinese Apple users and bloggers marvelled at the "formidable Siri" in a nation where all forms of prostitution, including escort services are considered illegal even though it widely existed through out the country.
Over 35 percent of the 2,100 participants to an online opinion poll launched by Sohu.Com last week agreed "Siri is very powerful" shortly after "Siri's answers" became one of the most discussed topics on the popular microblogging site Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter.
Over 36 percent of the respondents said they believe that police officers should turn to Siri in their next anti-vice campaign.
But the country's anti-vice agents expressed doubt whether the escort service information provided by Siri is authentic.
"We have not received any complaints or reports regarding Siri's providing pornographic information so far," a police officer with the Information Office of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau said.
Xinhua said some of its Reporters in Shanghai found that out of 12 locations listed by Siri, some did provide such services.
Russia threatens international arbitration on 2G licence cancellation for Sistema
Moscow : Stepping up pressure on India, Russia on Monday warned it that it will go for international arbitration if the issue of cancellation of 2G licence involving Russian telecom giant Sistema was not resolved in Indian courts.
"If the issue of cancellation of 2G license to Sistema is not resolved in Indian courts, we will go for international arbitration," Russian Ambassodor to India Alexander Kadakin said on the sidelines of a cultural event.
"We are upset about the decision," Kadakin added.
Russia, which has been conveying its unhappiness over the issue time and again, had earlier said the row over Sistema will have "great repercussion" not only on Indo-Russian bilateral cooperation but also for foreign investments in India.
Sistema holds 56.68 percent stake in Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd whose 21 out of 22 licences were cancelled by the Supreme Court in February on the grounds that the 122 permits issued by the then Telecom Minister A Raja were "arbitrary and unconstitutional". Russian government holds 17.14 percent stake in SSTL.
Russia had previously asserted it will not let Sistema's USD 3.1 billion investment in its Indian telecom venture go waste due to "internal problems" here.
UBS to cut 10,000 jobs
HONG KONG -- Swiss bank UBS said Tuesday it intends to slash 10,000 jobs as the firm pares back its investment banking arm.
The restructuring will save the bank more than $3.6 billion over three years, according to the firm's estimates. The loss of 10,000 bankers represents more than 15% of the bank's workforce, which will fall to a total of 54,000 employees by 2015.
"This decision has been a difficult one, particularly in a business such as ours that is all about its people," CEO Sergio P. Ermotti said in a statement.
The layoffs are one of the industry's largest staff reductions since the financial crisis ripped through Wall Street firms. Ermotti said some of the cuts would come through attrition, but others will surely be involuntary as the bank shuts down entire sectors of its business.
The bank is exiting the fixed income trade, saying that its operation had been "rendered uneconomical by changes in regulation and market developments."
IAC has 'dubious' foreign funding: BJP mouthpiece
Arvind Kejriwal's Indian Against Corruption (IAC) has "dubious" foreign funding and his allegations against BJP president Nitin Gadkari were at the behest of his "masters", party mouthpiece 'Kamal Sandesh' has alleged, a charge rejected by the social activist.
The editorial of the latest edition of Kamal Sandesh has alleged that Kejriwal has taken a "supari (contract)" from foreign sources and demanded that the Manmohan Singh government investigate the matter.
"After ruining the Anna Andolan and in pursuit of its naked ambition, Team Kejriwal is involved in a conspiracy to create suspicion about 'democracy' and by doing so it is definitely playing into the hands of those who have no attachment either to India or Bharat Mata," the article said.
Kejriwal had recently alleged that Gadkari's Purti Group has bought farmers' land at cheap rates from the government and also got irrigation water from the dam in Gosikhurd area of Vidarbha diverted to his sugar factory.
"The main game of Kejriwal may be related to funding. The thing to be known is whether the funds belong to India or to the forces which want to weaken the country," the publication said.
The editorial alleged that Kejriwal had distorted Gadkari's words in his bid to earn respect by highlighting the shortcomings of others.
"One who could not remain loyal to Anna, how can he be loyal to the nation? He is engaged in digging holes in democracy with the help of foreign funds. Kejriwal has perhaps forgotten that democracy is deeply entrenched in the soul and body of the nation," it said.
Kejriwal has refuted these allegations and asked the BJP to come clean on its funding in the last ten years.
"They have said we are being foreign funded. The list of all the donors to this movement is on our website. I challenge BJP, if they have the guts and courage, let BJP put the list of all the donors to the party for the last ten years," he said.

RBI monetary stance aimed to reinforce govt policy: Subbarao
![]() |
| D Subbarao |
RBI Governor D Subbarao on Tuesday said its monetary stance is aimed at reinforcing the government's policy actions that will have a "positive impact" on growth.
A revival in investment activity, which is key to stimulating growth, depends particularly on the recent policy announcements by the government being translated into effective actions, Subbarao said while announcing the second quarterly review of the monetary policy.
"Yesterday's statement by the Finance Minister reaffirming commitment to fiscal consolidation will open up space for monetary policy to restrain inflation and support growth," he said.
Among other factors, Subbarao said, the stance of the credit policy is to reinforce the "positive impact" of the government policy actions on growth as inflation risks moderate.
He said that as recent policy initiatives by the government start yielding results in terms of revitalising activity, they will open up space for monetary policy to work in concert to stimulate growth.
"However, in doing so, it is important not to lose sight of the primary objective of managing inflation and inflation expectations," Subbarao added.
Finance Minister P Chidambaram yesterday announced a five year roadmap for fiscal consolidation to promote investments, contain inflation and take India to high growth trajectory.
Besides, the government has announced a slew of reforms measures, including raising diesel price, capping supply of subsidised LPG cylinders and further liberalising FDI policy, to stimulate economic growth.
Since April 2012, the RBI's monetary policy stance has sought to balance the growth-inflation dynamics through calibrated easing.
"The transmission of these policy impulses through the economy is still underway. In conjunction with the fiscal and other measures recently announced by the government, the Reserve Bank's monetary policy stance should work towards arresting the loss of growth momentum over the next few months," Subbarao said.
The RBI is in the process of strengthening the regulatory framework for dealing with Systemically Important Financial Institutions (SIFIs) which may come under stress and may require resolution, he said.
"Accordingly, the government and the Reserve Bank are setting up a High Level Working Group to recommend a comprehensive resolution regime for all types of financial institutions in India," he added.

Hosting video on Twitter is becoming more popular but, as All Things D highlights, the majority of video shared on Twitter is still via a link from a video sharing site such as YouTube and so far it is not clear if this activity would be halted or blocked as a result of of a new video hosting service.

Smarter birds can solve problems spontaneously
Calling someone bird-brained can be disparaging, but certain bird species are indeed smarter than we think. Crows, for example, solve problems instinctively, although other animals rarely do it spontaneously, according to a new research.
Crows are able to rapidly access food hung on the end of a long string by repeatedly pulling and then stepping on the string. For over 400 years it has been a mystery as to how the birds spontaneously solve the "string pulling" problem.
Researchers from University of Auckland, New Zealand, show that birds do not first solve such problems in their heads. Rather, problem solving occurs online as the bird makes the food on the end of the string move, the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences online reports.
India-US-Japan trilateral meet today
The US' 'pivot-to-Asia' policy, Iran, China-Japan maritime dispute and South China Sea will be among the issues to be discussed during the 3rd round of India-US-Japan Trilateral dialogue here on Monday apart from finding areas of cooperation between the three countries.
According to official sources, the US is expected to brief about its much-talked about policy of 'pivot to Asia', an American move driven by the allure of emerging Asian economies, especially China and India. Another reason includes the draw-down of US forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan, which enables the US military to concentrate more resources on the Asia-Pacific. The US is also expected to talk about Iran's contentious nuclear programme.

Facebook's top exec quits to create London's Silicon Valley
One of Facebook's most senior executives, Joanna Shields, is quitting the social media giant to join British Prime Minister David Cameron's project to create a competitor to California's Silicon Valley in East London.
Shields, the vice-president of Facebook who is responsible for business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, is to become the new chief executive of the Tech City Investment Organisation.
According to the Telegraph, Shields said that she had always had a 'passion' for public policy and was keen to help the government.
Tech City is already home to 3,000 digital companies, most of them start-ups.
"There are not many opportunities where you know from day one you can contribute on a huge level," Shields, the former chief executive of Bebo who was also a senior figure at Google, said.
"I think London is an extraordinary city. This is the gateway to the world. It should not be a step-child to other cities. It should be in its rightful place as the centre for innovation in my world, the digital industries," she added.
According to the report, the move will be a blow for Facebook which faced criticism earlier this month for the small amount of tax it paid in the UK.
Shields also revealed that she had received a number of negative emails over the tax issue which were "not nice."
She said that changing the listing rules in London - which the government wants to do - would help keep technology companies in the UK, the report added.
